LSI 9211-8i Overview:
The LSI 9211-8i PCI Express® (PCIe®)-to-Serial Attached SCSI (SAS) host bus adapter (HBA), hereinafter referred to
as the LSI SAS 9211-8i HBA, provides high-performance internal storage connectivity for servers and workstations. The
LSI SAS 9211-8i HBA provides eight lanes of 6Gb/s SAS connectivity and is matched with eight lanes of PCIe 2.0 5Gb/s
performance. The low-profile design of the SAS HBA includes a full-height bracket and low-profile mounting bracket
that creates a universal fit for any server. The LSI SAS 9211-8i HBA is based on the Fusion-MPT™-architected LSI SAS
2008 controller that integrates the latest enhancements in PCIe 2.0 technology and 6Gb/s SAS technology.
The LSI Logic LSI00194 HBA has onboard Flash memory for the firmware, and BIOS and NVSRAM for Integrated RAID
support (RAID 0, RAID 1, RAID 10, and RAID 1E).

Flashed this to IT mode to use as a non-RAID controller in an unRAID server box, following instructions on the unRAID forums. Couldn't be happier with the controller.
This card Works flawlessly in my FreeNAS box with eight hard drives (7K4000). The OS saw all the drives, and I implemented ZFS RAIDZ2 with no issues. The PCB is also pleasantly thick, and the whole thing seems very well constructed. Overall it is a great little card.
I’ve had this for about 2 month now. Rock solid as a freeNAS controller for 8 Western Digital 2TB Reds. The only reason it didn’t get 5 stars, and I considered giving it 3 stars is LSI went to Broadcom, Broadcom went to Avago. The result is finding the latest firmware package 9211-8i_Package_P20_IR_IT_FW_BIOS_for_MSDOS_Windows.zip is bordering on impossible. I looked around for the file name and was able to search on their site with the above finding
There is no landing page as far as I can tell. And this will most likely be the last update. But if you want the latest driver from 2016. There you go.
Again the controller has been flawless the last few years. It just been handed around a bit too much.
Great for adding a number of single (JBOD) SSD drives
I installed this on an ASUS TUF H370-Pro Gaming MOBO. I had quite a search to find the correct sequence to make the flash to IT with a more recent version of firmware. Apparenly a DOS boot would not work with certain Intel configurations. The various directions that were offered as standard did not work. Performance is virtually the same as my MOBO SATA III ports for the same drives. And, I can now extend my system by 8 drives.
They key that worked for me over all other things however was setting up the USB stick with two directories on a freshly formatted FAT32 file system, 32MB size partition, /boot/efi and /efi/boot with both Bootx64.efi and Shellx64.efi name forms of the Shell_Full.efi file I downloaded. (Rename Shell_Full.efi to both of these and copy to both sub directories). Proceed with the rest of the directions.
